The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are institutes of national importance established through an act of Parliament. These institutes play a leading role in technological manpower development and research programmes, comparable to the very best in the world. These institutions are known for providing quality education in science and technology. The training and education at IITs is so rigorous and well established that today almost all the key positions in every giant industrial and corporate houses in India and abroad are held by IITians.
There are 15 IITs at present, located at Bhubaneswar, Bombay, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderbad, Indore, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Mandi, Patna, Rajasthan and Roorkee. The admissions to B.Tech, B.Arc., Integrated M.Tech and M.Sc. courses at these institutions are made through a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Besides admission to IITs, the admissions to IT- BHU Varanasi & ISM Dhanbad are also made through IIT-JEE.
Important points Candidates belonging to GE, OBC and DS categories must secure at least 60% marks in aggregate in their XII. Whereas, those belonging to SC, ST and PD categories must secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the class XII. One can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years. First attempt in the year in which he appears for class XII and the second attempt the consecutive year. Those who have accepted admission after qualifying in JEE in earlier year by paying full fees at any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi or ISM, Dhanbad, are NOT ELIGIBLE to write JEE at all irrespective of whether or not they joined in any of the programmes.
Type of Examination IIT-JEE is comprises of two papers each of three hours duration. Both the question papers consist of three separate sections on Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Both papers are of objective type, designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates.
