Test Format and Duration of the BITSAT Exam

BITSAT is conducted online. It is only offered in English medium. Candidate sits in front of a computer and test assumes his or her familiarity with keyboard, mouse and basic computer operations. Questions are drawn from a large question bank in the server that has been developed by experts. Each question set is unique but is also at par with other sets that are generated in terms of difficulty level and content.

BITS exam is of 3-hour duration and there are no breaks in between. It has four sections and a total of 150 questions are generated.
There are 150 objective questions, each with four answer options. For every correct answer a candidate gets 3 marks; while 1 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.
The distribution of 150 questions is as follows:

  • Physics-40 Questions
  • Chemistry-40 Questions
  • English Proficiency-15 Questions
  • Logical Reasoning-10 Questions
  • Mathematics-45 Questions
Parts Subject No. of Questions
Part 1 Physics 40
Part 2 Chemistry 40
Part 3 (a) English Proficiency
(b) Logical Reasoning

10
Part 4 Maths 45
  Total 150

If a candidate completes all 150 questions before the completion of 3 hours, he/she can choose to answer another 12 questions. These questions are from Physics, Chemistry and Maths.

Questions in BITSAT are objective-type, multiple-choice questions. Each question has four answers to choose from. Candidates can skip questions or go back to correct questions attempted before.

There is no time limit for an individual section of BITSAT and all 150 questions can be attempted in any order you like. Computer does not allow you to choose more than one option.

Candidates are generally expected to attempt 150 questions in 180 minutes of allotted time. However, if candidates have done and re-checked all their 150 answers without skipping any of them, they have an option to attempt 12 extra questions – 4 each from Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry. Students are not allowed to correct 150 questions they answered before while attempting these 12 questions.

These 12 questions allow exceptional candidates a chance to score higher. However, since BITSAT has negative marking, one should not attempt these questions based on wild guess.

Scoring and Grading of BITSAT Exams

BITSAT has negative marking system. 3 marks are awarded for each correct answer, whereas 1 mark is deducted for each incorrect answer. No marks are awarded to questions that have not been attempted.

When the candidates complete and submit the test, they can see their score and number of correct and incorrect answers there and then on the computer. Once they have completed all the tests, candidates can also check and print their score report from the BITS website.

Candidates, who attain more than minimum marks specified at Class 12th, are chosen for their preferred courses based on their position on the BITSAT merit list. To break the tie between students who attain same scores, their scores in different sections are compared in the following manner.

When two candidates attain same score on BITSAT

  1. Their Mathematics scores are compared If tie still exists
  2. Their Physics scores are compared If tie still exists
  3. Their Chemistry scores are compared If tie still exists
